Joe Baiyor

He Made Room for Me in Atlanta

Sometimes you don't need someone to give you an opportunity.

You need someone willing to make an introduction.

I met Joe Baiyor through his wife and granddaughter, who were frequent patrons at an establishment where I worked part-time. What began as a simple connection eventually introduced me to an entire family.

The Baiyors.

A family full of love, generosity, faith, and the kind of warmth that makes you feel welcomed.

Joe and his wife had done something years before that I was trying to figure out for myself.

They had moved from the West Coast to Georgia more than twenty years ago and created a life here.

So when Joe learned that I was trying to find my footing in Atlanta, he didn't just tell me it was possible.

He started helping me.

"I Know Somebody"

Joe connected me with anyone and everyone he knew.

One introduction led to another.

A name.

A phone number.

A conversation.

Another connection.

And while every introduction didn't necessarily lead to some grand opportunity, they gave me something I needed just as much at the time:

Momentum.

I felt like I was progressing.

I was meeting people.

Learning the city.

Building relationships.

Slowly creating a community in a place where I was still learning where I belonged.

Joe never made me feel like helping me was an inconvenience.

That's just his heart.

Kind.

Spiritual.

Generous.

And every bit as big as the heart of his lovely wife.

His Testimony Became Hope

What Joe may not have realized was that his own story was helping me too.

He had already done what I was attempting to do.

He had left what was familiar.

Moved across the country.

Built relationships.

Created community.

And made Georgia home.

His testimony became evidence for me.

Maybe I could do it too.

Maybe Atlanta didn't have to remain the city I visited.

Maybe I could actually create a life here.

There is something powerful about meeting someone who has already walked through a door you're standing in front of.

They don't have to push you through it.

Sometimes their life simply gives you enough courage to walk through it yourself.

Joe did that for me.

The Baiyor Family

And then there's the family.

Because you can't really tell my story about Joe without acknowledging the Baiyor family.

Love lives there.

The kind that extends beyond last names.

The kind that makes room.

The kind that says, Come on in. Let me introduce you to somebody.

That meant more to me than they probably knew.

I was building something new—not only professionally, but personally. I was learning Atlanta, finding community, making connections and discovering what this next chapter of my life could become.

The Baiyor family became part of that chapter.

A Seat for Joe

When I think about BeeSeatedHere, I think about the people who made room for me before I ever started intentionally making room for others.

Joe is one of those people.

He taught me something through his actions:

When you have access, share it.
When you know someone who can help, make the introduction.
When someone is trying to find their way, don't just wish them well—help them find a door.

Joe, thank you for every introduction.

Thank you for believing there was room for me in Atlanta.

Thank you for sharing your connections without hesitation.

Thank you for allowing your testimony to become encouragement for mine.

And thank you to the entire Baiyor family for showing me what it feels like to be welcomed into something that was already full of love.

Atlanta eventually became more than somewhere I was considering.

It became home.

And when I look back at the people who helped me believe I could actually create a space for myself here, Joe Baiyor, your name is part of that story.

You made room for me.

So there will always be a seat at my table for you.
